Work Records: Mapplethorpe studio

Mapplethorpe Style (studio)
In this lesson we watched and took notes on a video about the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. We then went to the studio and did a shoot inspired by the work we had seen by the photographer. Although the photographers work was not my favourite I think the shoot went well and Mapplethorpes style was reflected in my work.
I like this photograph because Beth seems to show a lot of emotion in the photo through her facial expression and body language. I also like the fact that she is not central so the background is shown to have some importance.

I like this photograph because Beth's facial expression is very powerful but it is not clear what emotion she is feeling in the photograph. I think she shows up well and stands out against the dark background making her the focus in the photo. I also think that her skin tone looks very nice in the photograph.
This photo isn't very good because it is too dark and therefore we are unsure what is actually happening in the photo. The body language is good but because Beth's hair is dark her head almost completely disappears against the dark background.

Work Records: Mapplethorpe location

Mapplethorpe Style (location)

In this lesson we watched a video on the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. We then had the opportunity to go out on location and shoot in the style and taking inspiration from his work.
Robert Mapplethorpe had a photo with a model in a similar position so I tried to recreate this. If I was to do this photo again I would use a dark background as this is more likely what Mapplethorpe would have used.
This picture isn't really like any Mapplethorpe pictures but it does quite relate to contrast. If I were to improve it I would photograph the whole of Adi so that the expression on her face can be seen as this is often shown in Mapplethorpes work.

Work Records: Contrast two

Contrast (two)

In this lesson we were shooting contrast in the studio. I think this lesson went well because i think i got some attractive photos and they show what they are meant to. If I was to improve this shoot I would add other things to the shoot as some of the photos got a bit repetitive.
This is an effective contrast photo because only part of Adi can be seen so there is the contrast between her being there or not. Also there large amount of background so the contrast between the little bit of Adi and the background is obvious and stands out.

Although this photo does show contrast in the background and object I would change this photo quite a lot. Firstly I would make sure the top and bottom of her hand is visible and not cut off. I would also show her whole hand from the wrist otherwise it isnt really clear that contrast is the reason for the photo.

Work Records: Contrast one

Contrast (one)

In this lesson we had to photograph contrast around the college. This was things that showed obvious contrast in colour, texture or width. I found it quite difficult to find these around college which might have been reflected in my work as the things I photographed were a bit boring and dull.

This photo shows the contrast between the textures on the bin. One half is very smooth and the other is textured shown by the ridges. I do not really like this photograph as a bin is not an attractive object to photograph and the lines in the photo are not strait. To improve the photo I would make sure that the lines are strait.

This photo shows the contrast in the red and white  paint on the wall. In the photo the texture of the wallpaper can also be seen. I think that the separation line between the colours is quite strait but I think there is more of the white shown so to improve this I would make it equal each side.

This photo shows the contrast between the colour of the grass, mud and pavement. I dislike this picture because it is unattractive and not strait. Also there is more of the green and brown than the pavement which creates a very uneven photo.

Work Records: Free Shoot

Free shoot

In this lesson were aloud to shoot what we like in the studio. I chose to try and take influence from Robert Mapplethorpe in my photos again as I enjoyed his last time. I have tried to show emotion in the face of my model but also try and achieve mixed emotions with the photo.
I like this photo because of how clear Sophie's body and form are against the background even though she is wearing dark clothes against a dark background. Because she is looking over her shoulder into the distance she appears to be full of emotion but what the emotion is exactly is unclear. She is slightly of centre which I would change if I took this photo again as Mapplethorpes photos seem to have symmetry.
I like this photograph because once again the emotion being shown is unclear. Also Sophie is very central in this photo so this shows that it is influenced by Mapplethorpe's work. Part of Sophie's shoulder blends in with the background which I think is quite interesting because this creates different meanings to the photo.

I do not like this photo as much as the others as I think there is too many emotions being shown in Sophie's face at once. Also once again she is off centre which is not really how Mapplethorpes photos were.

Work Records: Studio One

Studio one

In this lesson we had to go out and look for leaves that had strong autumn colours and then photograph them. I found this lesson quite difficult as I didnt really know how I wanted to arrange the leaves to make an interesting photograph.
I like this photograph because it shows more than one colour and also shows the change between being green in the summer and turning red in the autumn. I also quite like the arrangement because you can see how the shape of the leaves.
I dont like this photograph because there isn't really a main focus to the picture as there are to many leaves. I do like the fact that you can see lots of shades of red and yellow and still a bit of green. To improve this lesson I would use a prop to help layout the leaves and to make it a bit more interesting.

Work Records: Studio two

Studio two
In this lesson we had to go out and find autumn leaves and bring them in to photograph. When I did this I was intending to try and use these photos in the competition so I used a book to photograph with the leaves. I think this created very interesting photos that fitted well with the competition and was more interesting than the photos of the leaves alone.

I think this is a really interesting photo because it shows the autumn leaves which was the aim for the lesson but also has a sort of magical side to it which fits really well with the competition theme. The page appears to be turning but nothing can be seen turning the page which is the reason for the magical effect the photo has. The book also has a yellowy colouring which along with the leaves creates an old looking photo.

I like this photograph because the autumn leaves create a frame for the book emphasising the importance of it which brings many different meanings to the photo. The photo also fits to both of the aims of the lesson as books can be used to represent quiet reflection.

I dislike this photo because the lighting is very bland and dark so you can barely see the leaves in the photo. Also the leaf is very normal and boring creating a very boring photo.

Work Records: Walk Two

Walk (two)
In this lesson we once again went for a walk outside of college. This time we were still photographing autumn colours but also focusing more on the competition. I think the photos taken in this lesson were better than the last walk lesson as I knew more specifically what I would photograph.

I think this is an effective photo because the flowers have a very sharp focus and the detailed outline can be seen contrasting against the green background. The flowers also look as if they have a sort of frost glisten to them showing the autumn weather fitting with the lessons aim.

I think that this is an effective photo because the tree shows the autumn colours, the bareness of the tree and the colour of the sky in the reflection of a puddle. I think this photo shows lots of different aspects of autumn weather in one photo. The photo is also good for the competition as it literally shows reflection.

I don't really think this photo is very interesting as too many things are happening at once. There is the reflection of the puddle, the shoes and the reflection of the body and the fence. I think this then makes it difficult to know where to look or what the focus of the photo is. I think to improve this photo I would decide on a particular centre point for the photo and decide what I want to achieve by taking this photo.

Work Records: Walk One

Walk (one)
In this lesson we went for a walk out of the college. The original aim for the lesson was to photograph autumn colours but unfortunately the leaves were still not green. We were then just photographing things that could be used for the competition with 'quiet reflection' in mind. I think some of the photos I took turned out very well and fitted with the title, others I feel could have been improved on.

I like this photograph because the sun creates an interesting glow in the trees creating quite an interesting unique photo. I also like that the angle looks up from below the trees emphasising the height and power of the trees.

I think this is an effective photo because the blackberry's are central and I like the way they are all red except the one in the middle which has changed to black. I think this is a good representation of the changing seasons which fits with the autumn colours. The blackberry's are also in focus where as the background blurs slightly which I would emphasize if I was to edit the photo.

I don't think this photo is very effective or a very interesting photo. Although the photo shows autumn red it doesn't really show much else. The photo is a little boring as it only shows one of the autumn colours.

Work Records: Movement

Movement

In this lesson I was taking pictures of things showing movement. I had to make the shutter speed very slow so that it would create the blur. I would either take photos of things that had movement such as doors closing, cars and jumping or I took pictures of stationary objects and moved the camera. To improve the photos from this lesson I would leave college so that there are more things that show movement.

This is an effective movement photo because the blurring shows the movement of the car against the stationary background. I think when I took photo I moved slightly as the background is also slightly blurred, so to improve this picture I would make sure i keep still in order to only capture the moevement of the object.

This is a good movement picture because the focus is on Beth's movement as she is really blurred compared to the background.

When I took this photo my aim was for the wind to blow and the leaves and tree to blow and show movement. This photo didn't really go as planned as the movement wasn't really obvious enough to create an effective movement photo.

Work Records: Tone

 Tone
In this lesson I took pictures in order to show tone in photography. To improve my tone pictures I would put more thought into what I photograph in order to show tone. I didn't really understand what aspects would affect the tone in the photo.

This photo is an effective tone photo because the is a range of dark tones on the gravel. I would crop out the building as this shows less tone and this would make it more obvious that tone is the reason for the photo.

This is an effective tone picture because the blank light tone shown in the sky creates a good background for the darker tones of the tree to be shown on. The silhouette of the tree has a dark tone.

This photograph only really shows one dark tone as the leaves all have a very similar tone and there is not much background in the photo creating a bland photograph.

Work Records: Shape

Shape
In this lesson I took photos of different shapes in photography around college. In order to improve these photos I would isolate the shape in the picture in order to make them the central focus point of the picture and make it obvious that shape is what is being photographed.

This photo is effectively showing shape as it is the obvious focus of the picture. I don't think that this is a particularly attractive photo because its a bit dull. To improve it I would crop round the square so that there is just a small border of grass around the shape.

This is an effective photo for shape because the circle is central and obvious in the photo It also makes an attractive photo. To improve the photo I would try and be directly in the middle of the window.

Although the shape is obvious and central in the photo there is too much background ruining the photo. If I edited the photo I would get closer to the object so there is less background and the shape is bigger.
